چکیده

We introduce a new multiscale finite element method which is able to accurately capture solutions of elliptic interface problems with high contrast coefficients by using only coarse quasiuniform meshes, and without resolving the interfaces. A typical application would be the modelling of flow in a porous medium containing a number of inclusions of low (or high) permeability embedded in a matrix of high (respectively low) permeability. Our method is H1conforming, with degrees of freedom at the nodes of a triangular mesh and requires the solution of subgrid problems for the basis functions on elements which straddle the coefficient interface, but uses standard linear approximation otherwise. A key point is the introduction of novel coefficient-dependent boundary conditions for the subgrid problems. Under moderate assumptions, we prove that our methods have (optimal) convergence rate of O(h) in the energy norm and O(h2) in the L2 norm where h is the (coarse) mesh diameter and the hidden constants in these estimates are independent of the “contrast” (i.e. ratio of largest to smallest value) of the PDE coefficient. For standard elements the best estimate in the energy norm would be O(h1/2−ε) with a hidden constant which in general depends on the contrast. The new interior boundary conditions depend not only on the contrast of the coefficients, but also on the angles of intersection of the interface with the element edges.

A link between local projection stabilizations and the continuous interior penalty method for convection-diffusion problems

We study stabilization methods for the discretization of convection-dominated elliptic convection-diffusion problems by linear finite elements. It turns out that there exist close relations between a new version of stabilization via local projection and the continuous interior penalty method. A Multiscale Mortar Multipoint Flux Mixed Finite Element Method

In this paper, we develop a multiscale mortar multipoint flux mixed finite element method for second order elliptic problems. The equations in the coarse elements (or subdomains) are discretized on a fine grid scale by a multipoint flux mixed finite element method that reduces to cell-centered finite differences on irregular grids. The subdomain grids do not have to match across the interfaces....

A Localized Orthogonal Decomposition Method for Semi-linear Elliptic Problems

In this paper we propose and analyze a localized orthogonal decomposition (LOD) method for solving semi-linear elliptic problems with heterogeneous and highly variable coefficient functions. This Galerkin-type method is based on a generalized finite element basis that spans a low dimensional multiscale space. The basis is assembled by performing localized linear fine-scale computations on small...
